The best camera is the one you have in your hand

From the moment I bought a cell phone with a camera on it, I was obsessed with taking pictures with a mobile device. There was something about the portability of my phone, the "in-the-momentness" of those pictures that attracted me to the technology. I would intermittently use a point-and-shoot digital camera and even briefly toyed with a DSLR, but my phone was what I always had on me. It fit in my pocket, portable and convenient. I liked the challenge of taking pictures with a camera that wasn’t technologically advanced but that, with the right set up and (later) a bit of editing, resulted in some stunning and creative images.

When I got my first iPhone (a 3g in about 2009, I think), I quickly became obsessed with what was later coined as “iphoneography.” As each iteration of the iPhone camera improved, my photography skills and pictures improved with it. The early days of Instagram brought the ability to see what others were doing, expanding my creativity.

My iPhone today is a photography powerhouse. It still can’t replace a DSLR camera but it is getting closer, and can in many situations do just as well. And the challenge of taking pictures with this little device I carry around in my pocket still feels just as exciting and in the moment.
