My 2026 digital camera resolution has already failed
(or why I don't make New Years' resolutions)
Just two months down in 2026, and I have already failed at the one thing I resolved to do - make use of my digital camera instead of always using my iPhone. Instead, I bought a new iPhone, the iPhone 17 Pro. Because that's a totally normal response to failing at something.
Did I need a new iPhone? No, not really. But the improvements in the camera this year made it worthwhile spending of money (at least from my perspective).
I really did try to use my digital camera, but more often than not, it wasn't practical. I take pictures very much in the moment, and in the moment, it's my iPhone that is in my pocket.
The other issue with the digital camera I found when I have tried to use it is that it takes just long enough to turn on and focus that the thing I want to take a picture of is sometimes gone by the time I get it set up. With the iPhone's dedicated camera button that is never an issue. Muscle memory help.
And if I am being honest, in most situations, I feel really weird taking out a digital camera to capture something, but not weird at all taking out my iPhone.
I would like to say that I am still going to try and use the digital camera, and I might. But practically, the iPhone just works better. It turns out the best camera is still the one you have in your hand.
